Chiropractic pregnancy care with our Chiropractor Jess Mangala

Pregnancy is an exciting time when your body undergoes a lot of changes. Chiropractic care can play an important role in making sure the experience is as comfortable as possible. Our clinic Chiropractor, Dr Jess Mangala, shares why she loves working with mums to improve their wellbeing throughout pregnancy and how the process works.

Chiropractic practice is a rewarding career – I get to spend my days helping to relieve pain and improve wellbeing for my clients. And one of my favourite parts of what I do is caring for mums through their pregnancies.

Pregnancy is an amazing time as the body changes and adapts to creating new human life. It’s exciting, nerve-wracking and, sometimes, not very comfortable. All those changes your body undergoes mean that pain through pregnancy is relatively common. But it isn’t normal, and you don’t have to just “put up with it”.

In my practice, my main role is to help mums feel supported and listened to through their pregnancy, so we can work together on treatment that works for them.

What to expect from your first chiropractic appointment

For those who have never been to see a chiropractor, an initial consultation for our pregnant mums — or those looking to become pregnant soon — includes a thorough health history and discussion of birth plan and birth team. After that, we complete a physical examination which involves checking your pelvic and spinal alignment, muscle tone and strength, to get an accurate picture of your current state.

We then develop a treatment plan for you. Treatment is modified depending on your needs and which stage of pregnancy you’re in at the time. We have a variety of tools, techniques, and training to support you at any point during your pregnancy.

For example, different sized pregnancy belly pillows and adjustable chiropractic tables allow mums to lay comfortably on their stomach, sides and on their backs throughout treatment. I utilise low force techniques such as the activator and arthrostim, which help to gently stimulate movement in the spine without the need for spinal manipulations. I also practise the sacro-occipital technique; a specialised technique which focuses on the pelvis and sacrum to create space and encourage balance in the body.

In practice we also discuss pelvic floor strengthening and prevention of diastasis recti (abdominal separation). As part of my treatment plans, we also lead into post-partum care and how to safely return to regular activity. In this part of the plan, I provide stretches and appropriate exercises both to keep mums moving during pregnancy and to support recovery. I work alongside other women’s health practitioners to make sure you get the best care.

Drawing on many years of experience, I’m able to tailor short- and long- term treatment plans to address your needs. You can rest assured that any treatments you receive with us are comfortable and safe for both mum and bub.

Pregnancy is such an exciting and special time. Being well-supported in looking after your wellbeing and physical health helps to make it that much more enjoyable.

So, if you’re looking to fall pregnant or already expecting, give us a call and book in for a consultation. I can’t wait to hear from you.
