When Kids Learn to Listen to Their Bodies: Ivy’s Experience with Massage

Recently, one of our Massage Therapists at Realign Health Clinic, Audrey, had the privilege of interviewing Ivy, a thoughtful 12-year-old who has been coming in for massage. Her perspective gives a wonderful insight into how supportive touch can help young people feel more comfortable in their bodies.
Leading by Example
Ivy first decided to try massage because her mum, Rebecca, came regularly and she “wanted to feel relaxed like mum”.
Ivy had noticed how Bec would leave her appointments feeling “airy and floaty” because her back wasn’t as painful. She also noticed Rebecca didn’t need her heat pack as much afterwards and seemed more relaxed overall.
Children often observe self-care before they practise it themselves. For Ivy, seeing her mum prioritise her wellbeing showed her that her own comfort matters too.
What Massage Feels Like, From Ivy’s Point of View
Ivy described the feeling of massage in her own words:
“I feel the muscles that are very painful be released.”
She says she feels:
Relaxed
Comfortable
Sleepy
Pain ease until she “makes them painful again”
After her massage sessions Ivy says:
“I don’t feel any pain.” “I feel airy and floaty.”
Sometimes the biggest insights come in the simplest words.
The Difference It Makes in Everyday Life
Massage has helped Ivy in ways that extend beyond the session itself.
She shared that it helps her:
Stand up straighter
Move more freely in dance
Fall asleep more easily
Ivy explained:
“It helps me to stand up straight and not slouch back because my shoulders are hurting. Or I can’t be able to do dance well with my legs because they’re painful… When I have a massage it releases all that and it helps me be stronger.”
Comfort, calm, and ease of movement influence how a child grows, plays, sleeps, and feels in their body.
Feeling Safe and Supported
Ivy also shared what she enjoys about visiting the clinic.
“I love coming to Realign Health because of all the friendly staff… they help me feel very relaxed. Especially Jess (chiropractor) and Audrey (massage therapist).”
Creating a safe and welcoming environment is an important part of caring for children and families.
At Realign Health Clinic in Leichhardt, every child is supported with patience, clear communication, and respect for their comfort and boundaries.
