Postnatal Recovery: Looking After Mum During the Fourth Trimester

The arrival of a new baby is often celebrated as an exciting milestone, but the weeks following birth can be one of the most physically and emotionally demanding periods a woman will experience. While so much attention naturally shifts to caring for your newborn, it's equally important to care for yourself.
Often referred to as the fourth trimester, the first three months after birth are a time of healing, adjustment, and recovery. Whether you had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, your body has undergone significant physical changes. Hormone levels shift dramatically after birth, your muscles and tissues begin repairing, and your body adapts to life after pregnancy.
Recovery doesn't happen overnight. Your body has done something extraordinary, and it deserves time, rest, and support as it heals. Every mother's recovery is unique, so it's important to be patient with yourself and allow your body the time it needs to recover.
Feeling Exhausted? You're Not Alone
Many new mothers expect to be tired, but the level of fatigue during the postnatal period can still come as a surprise. Postpartum exhaustion is often influenced by several factors, including:
Interrupted sleep from caring for your baby
Breastfeeding and the energy it requires
Significant hormonal changes
Physical recovery following pregnancy and birth
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this period may also be understood as a temporary depletion of Qi (the body's vital energy) and Blood following pregnancy and childbirth. Supporting the body's recovery during this time is an important focus of postnatal care within TCM.
Have You Noticed "Baby Brain"?
If you've found yourself walking into a room and forgetting why, struggling to concentrate, or feeling mentally foggy, you're certainly not alone. Many women experience what's commonly known as "baby brain," which may include:
Forgetfulness
Difficulty concentrating
Mental fog
Feeling overwhelmed by everyday tasks
These experiences are common during the postnatal period and may be influenced by hormonal changes, sleep deprivation, and the enormous adjustment of caring for a newborn.
Remember to be kind to yourself. Your brain is processing an incredible amount during this season of life.
The Emotional Ups and Downs of New Motherhood
Becoming a mother brings enormous change, and it's completely normal to experience a wide range of emotions after birth. During the fourth trimester, you may find yourself feeling more tearful than usual, experiencing moments of anxiety or irritability, feeling overwhelmed by the demands of caring for a newborn, or simply not quite like yourself. Some mothers may also notice a sense of disconnection as they adjust to this new chapter of life.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), these emotional changes may be understood as a natural consequence of the Qi and Blood shifts that occur throughout pregnancy and childbirth. However, this perspective does not replace appropriate medical assessment. If these feelings are persistent, severe, or begin to affect your ability to care for yourself or your baby, it's important to seek support from your GP, midwife, maternal child health nurse, or another qualified healthcare professional. Early support can make a significant difference.
How Acupuncture May Support Your Recovery
Many women choose acupuncture as part of their broader postnatal self-care routine during the fourth trimester. Acupuncture is commonly used to support general wellbeing and may help promote:
Relaxation
Improved sleep quality
A greater sense of balance during the postnatal transition
Caring for Mum Matters Too
It's easy to focus all of your energy on your new baby, but your wellbeing is just as important. Taking time to rest, nourish your body, accept help, and prioritise your own recovery isn't selfish, it's an important part of caring for your growing family.
